Why Aren’t Soy Candle Tops Always Smooth After Burning?

Why Aren’t Soy Candle Tops Always Smooth After Burning?

If you've ever burned a soy candle and noticed that the wax top doesn’t always remain smooth once it cools, you’re not alone. Unlike paraffin candles, which tend to reset with a consistent finish, soy wax can sometimes develop an uneven surface, including rough spots, craters, or even slight frosting. But why does this happen? And does it affect the quality of your candle?

At Harvey & Co. Sydney, we love soy wax for its clean-burning, eco-friendly benefits, and we know that a perfectly smooth top isn’t always guaranteed. Here’s why:

1. Natural Characteristics of Soy Wax

Soy wax is a natural material, derived from soybeans, and unlike synthetic waxes, it can behave unpredictably. As it cools after burning, it sometimes contracts at different rates, leading to an uneven surface. This is completely normal and doesn’t impact the way your candle burns or smells.

2. Temperature Fluctuations

The environment in which your candle is burning plays a big role in how the wax sets. If the room is cooler, the wax may harden too quickly, causing an uneven surface. On the other hand, if it's a warm day, the cooling process may be more gradual and result in a smoother finish.

3. Wax Memory Effect

Soy wax has a ‘memory,’ meaning it will often melt and re-harden based on previous burns. If a candle is burned for a shorter time than recommended (generally at least 2–3 hours), it may not fully melt across the top, leading to uneven cooling and rough textures.

4. Air Pockets and Natural Expansion

As the wax melts and then cools, tiny air pockets can form, which may cause a cratered effect on the surface. This is a natural occurrence and does not affect the candle’s performance.

How to Keep Your Soy Candle Looking Its Best

While an uneven surface doesn’t impact the quality of your candle, there are a few things you can do to encourage a smoother finish:

  • Allow a Full Melt Pool: The first burn is the most important! Always let the wax melt all the way to the edges of the container to create an even wax memory.
  • Burn in a Stable Environment: Keep your candle away from drafts, fans, or cold surfaces that can cause uneven cooling.
  • Trim the Wick Before Each Burn: A properly trimmed wick (around 5mm) ensures a steady burn, reducing uneven melting.

At Harvey & Co. Sydney, we embrace the natural beauty of soy wax, knowing that each candle is unique. A slightly textured top after burning is just a sign that you’re enjoying a high-quality, natural product—one that’s cleaner for you and the environment!
